Milwaukee artist and filmmaker Dasha Kelly joins Kickin' It With Tyree at the Milwaukee Film Festival to discuss her documentary Makin' Cake. Blending storytelling, history, and performance, the film explores access and privilege in America through the lens of baking and cake. Originally developed as a stage show, Makin’ Cake evolved into a documentary during the pandemic — turning a live experience into a cinematic one.

In this conversation, Kelly discusses: • How a community conversation in Sheboygan sparked the idea • Using creativity to open difficult conversations about race • Turning a touring stage show into a documentary • Why cake became the entry point for deeper dialogue • Premiering the film in Milwaukee and what that means personally • Creating an experience that blends art, education, and conversation Kelly describes Makin’ Cake as more than a film — it’s an experience designed to challenge, engage, and connect audiences.
